The organization, North American Basketball Association, was established in September, 1989.  It was founded by the late Dr. Ronald Damasco from Michigan, USA and Mr. Isagani Gregorio from Ontario, Canada. Mr. Gil Panganiban from Ontario, Canada provided the organization his full support who later aptly named the organization as North American Basketball Association (NABA). 

The organization was formed to provide a sporting activity for Filipinos that migrated in Canada and USA.  Over the years, the members and participation in NABA have grown. Kalahi is one of many Filipino basketball organizations participating in NABA.
